Episode 1: Breaking the spell of certitude

DECEMBER 5, 2022

In the first episode of the fly-bottle podcast, Elham Beygi chats with Fateme Ejaredar about the Modern Religious Schools in post-revolutionary Iran. They discuss the history behind these schools and their unintended consequences. We learn that despite their strict religious environments, these schools do not always succeed in shaping the mindset of their students in the way they intend to. Many of their graduates eventually experience a shift away from the religious codes imposed by schools and the state.

Fateme Ejaredar is a doctoral candidate in sociology at the University of Calgary. She has worked on topics in political sociology, sociology of religion, and how systems of oppression operate on different scales.
